Team Leader Volunteer
A.C.E.S. Associate Board  
Title: Team Leader

Status: Part-time: 7 - 12 hours per week (initial training takes place in August/September, with program running from October to May).

Position Purpose:
A.C.E.S. Team Leaders lead groups of 10–15 fourth through eighth grade inner-city students in improving their academic and social skills via tutoring, mentoring and administering A.C.E.S.’s engaging, purposeful curriculum. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Desire to work with inner-city students
  • Interest in urban education and/or social justice
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to lead groups of students and adult volunteers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth
  • Interest in social justice and/or urban education
  • Spanish or Hmong speaking and writing skills
  • Education majors or a degree in education
  • Work study eligible

 Hourly Wage: Starting at $9.00 per hour

Major Responsibilities:

1. Conduct all A.C.E.S. classroom sessions twice a week, including administering A.C.E.S. curriculum, managing the classroom and communicating with classroom teachers.
2. Communicate with Program Coordinator and other A.C.E.S. staff on student progress, discipline issues and program feedback.
3.  Keep up-to-date records of students, including contact information, disciplinary notices, trimester reports and other pertinent information.
4. Establish and maintain regular contact with families of A.C.E.S. students, including phone calls with parents/guardians, attending family nights and meeting with families whenever possible during special events.
5. Manage volunteers.
6. Participate in other A.C.E.S. activities, including field trips, in-class hours, fundraisers, mandatory trainings, staff meetings and special events.

Qualifications:

An interest in the academic well-being of inner-city students is a must.  Previous work with youth is useful.  Spanish or Hmong speakers a plus.

Time Commitment:

Weekly attendance at your program site during the semester is mandatory.  A.C.E.S. Program usually runs for about 2.5 hours.  Start and end times vary by site.  Volunteers are expected to schedule an interview/orientation with the Director of Volunteer Services before starting to volunteer.  Volunteers are also encouraged to participate in special events/field trips.

Position Purpose:
Tutor/Mentor Volunteers will work with inner-city youth (individually and in small groups) on homework assignments and A.C.E.S. curriculum activities, as well as participate in activities during free-time.  Volunteers are real-life role models for A.C.E.S. students, and positive relationships are encouraged to develop.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Schedule and attend initial interview/orientation.  Volunteers are also encouraged to attend periodic A.C.E.S. Staff trainings as they come up, as well as special events and field trips planned for the students.
2.
 Attend all scheduled after-school program sessions on the day(s) agreed upon at the initial interview/orientation.  This is critical in developing positive, trusting relationships with A.C.E.S. students.  If an absence is unavoidable, it is the responsibility of the tutors to give the staff as much notice as possible.  More than two unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the A.C.E.S. Program.
3. Work with students on homework assignments and A.C.E.S. curriculum activities, which are designed to target problem solving and critical thinking skills.
4. Take an active role in enforcing student attendance, behavior, and rules
5. Provide constant feedback to A.C.E.S. staff about student progress or concerns.

Time Commitment:

1. Attend one (1) regular A.C.E.S. session every week

Training:
All mentors are required to attend an initial training session before working with the students.

Title: A.C.E.S. Associate Board

Qualifications:
Members must have the ability to assist in the implementation of the A.C.E.S. mission. Must also be willing to work in an advisory capacity to the A.C.E.S. Board of Directors.

Position Purpose:
The A.C.E.S. Associate Board helps to sustain the organization by raising awareness of the A.C.E.S. program and supporting the organization's fundraising events.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Attend Associate Board meetings.
2. Participate in one or more subcommittees.
3. Understand the mission of A.C.E.S.
4. Serve as an ambassador for A.C.E.S. including fostering relationships and promoting A.C.E.S. mission in the funding, education and civic communities.

Time Commitment:
Length of Commitment: 1 year term, renewable.
Estimated Hours: 24 + hours per year
Scheduling: Quarterly Associate Board meetings, subcommittees as scheduled
