Green Central Students Hard at Work!
What is it like to have your first paid job? Five ACES students at Green Central School middle school had the opportunity to find out this summer.
Each participated in the Summer Jobs Program, run by the Powderhorn Neighborhood’s Mount Olive Church. By performing tasks such as maintaining gardens, identifying graffiti to be removed, and distributing flyers, the students learned leadership skills and responsibility. Plus they earned money, something not easy to do when you’re under sixteen.
“I like having something to do in the summer,” Valeria acknowledged. “I wish I could work even more!”
When asked what she’s been doing with her money, Daisy said she’s “been spending some of it on back-to-school clothes and saving the rest for college.”
Most students are planning on continuing working after school during the year, on alternating days with ACES.
