ACES Students All About Animals!
ACES middle school students at Olson, Green, and Monroe schools spent the past semester learning about animal-related issues. Some chose to study endangered animals, some decided to investigate animal mistreatment, and others explored the best way to care for pets. The resulting service-learning projects varied too.
One group of students launched a campaign to save the panda bears. Another group performed a skit for the other after-school classes about the dangers of dogfighting. Many students made fleece blankets for dogs that are waiting to be adopted.
To culminate their semester of learning, students took a tour of the Animal Humane Society over spring break. In addition to playing with the animals, students learned about the intake and adoption process, and the best way to interact with each type of animal.“I loved seeing the puppies and kittens,” one student exclaimed. “I hope they get adopted soon.”
“The visit was a huge success,” ACES Program Coordinator Emily Vogel said. “The students enjoyed getting a behind-the-scenes view of the Humane Society and learning more about its mission.”
