Olson School Gets Fit with Vikings & U of M
On Tuesday, October 18, the the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital and Vikings Fitness Playbook Staff visited students at Olson Middle School in north Minneapolis to talk about the importance of healthy eating. The U of M and the Vikings then presented ACES with a $500 check for ACES to apply to its health and fitness initiatives with students!
Viktor, the Vikings mascot, warmed up the crowd while Vikings running back Lorenzo Booker, the healthiest eater on the Vikings, spoke to students about how eating right allows him to perform well and feel great on and off the field. He then invited a group of students up on stage and showed them simple exercises they can do on a daily basis.
"We were happy to share with students our message about the importance of physical activity and making healthier eating choices," the U of M's Aaron Kelly, Ph.D., said. "It was a great time for everyone involved and a wonderfully successful event."
Following the general assembly with the entire student body, ACES students were then presented the “Step Up Challenge”, in which they are expected to record all of the steps they take from now until November 18. The students who take and record more than 300,000 steps will be entered into a drawing to win Vikings tickets.
After receiving their pedometers, the students immediately started keeping track of their steps. “I already walked 4,897 steps today. This is going to be easy!” said a sixth-grade ACES student.
The purpose of the event was to help students, through fun and demonstrated activity, understand the importance of eating right and making sure they get plenty of exercise. Emmy Matzner, ACES Minneapolis Program Coordinator, said the assembly achieved its goal. “It seems like the students are excited about eating healthy foods and being active."
A big thank you to the Vikings, University of Minnesota, and Olson School for making this celebration of health possible!
