ACES Set to Kick-Off Eighteenth Year

The 2011-12 school year is ACES' eighteenth. Thousands of at-risk urban youth have benefited from ACES' approach of academic, personal, and community growth over the years. This year, ACES plans on serving 500 students, a full 25 percent more than in 2010-11. Our students thank you all for your continued support, and everyone is eager to get the ACES school year underway. . . .

ACES Minneapolis Program Coordinator Emmy Matzner reported that following a Meet & Greet Family Night the previous week, Minneapolis students started the school year on August 29 with smiles and new backpacks. They were eager to meet their teachers, see their friends, and return to a learning environment.

Emmy and ACES AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Annie Hanrahan recently visited students at Green Central School, an ACES program site. The first question students asked was, “When does ACES start?” Although ACES' October 10 start date at Green is still a month away, students are eagerly looking forward to participating in the ACES after-school program.

ACES staffers are excited as well. “I’m really looking forward to spending time in classrooms and getting to know the students better,” Annie said about her first year with ACES. “I think it’s going to be a great year!”

And the other side of the river . . .

ACES AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Kit Alviz has been spending time at Farnsworth Aerospace School in east St. Paul, preparing to launch ACES at the school in early October. Students are buzzing about ACES.

I was in ACES before at another school," a new middle schooler at Farnsworth said. "We went on a field trip to a sports game and had a private suite." A curious classmate then asked, "What's a suite?"

ACES and 21st Century staff smiled with delight at the students' engagement and excitement about the new ACES after-school program.

It's going to be a great year for ACES students in both Minneapolis and St. Paul!
